Technical Style Guide
Overview
Follow the guidance below for most communications. Note that press releases generally adhere to AP style, which may differ from the guidelines provided here.
Abbreviations
- Do not use periods when referring to the US and OUS (outside of the United States).
- Do not abbreviate state names in body copy.
Acronyms
- Use full caps for all acronyms (ACC, AHA, HMO, EMR, EHR).
- On first mention in copy, introduce acronym in parentheses: "the electronic medical records (EMR) software is…"
- When the acronym is better known, introduce the full name in parentheses on first mention: "OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) monitors workplace safety…"
- Spell out acronyms that may be unfamiliar to the audience (especially in patient materials).
Check for
- Punctuation, paragraph breaks (orphans/widows)
- Repetitive word choice
- Run-on sentences, lengthy paragraphs
- Confirm any listed calendar dates against the actual calendar.
Possessives
- Product names are not possessive.
- Veracyte can be used in the possessive when talking about our culture, capabilities or benefits to build value.
Times
- Use capital AM or PM, no periods, for times.
- If times are both in morning or evening, use only one AM or PM after both times.
- Use each AM and PM for morning through afternoon times.
Example: 1:15-2:15 PM and 11:00 AM-1:00 PM
- Use :00 on hour times Example: 6:00 AM or 4:00 PM NOT 6 AM or 4 PM

- Full sentences have periods.
- Sentence fragments have no periods.
